Equality

PHOTO PROMPT © Jennifer Pendergast In response to Rochelle Wisoff’s Friday Fictioneers – It’s Only Words The challenge is to write a story in 💯 words or fewer, using the picture prompt.

Four acoustic guitars hung from their places on the music store display rack. Shiny guitar sighed. “It’s not fair, Stripes is always in front.”

Mahogany guitar chuckled, “At least you both get noticed, I get passed over constantly because I’m brown.”

Stripes guitar over-round body vibrated, “You have no idea how humiliating it is to be fondled and ogled then passed over for a better sounding piece like you Mahogany with your deep, rich cadence. Or you Shiny, with your new bridge and titanium bridge pins.”

Tucked away and forgotten in a cabinet beneath the three, Ukulele twanged in disgust.

  1. Drama at the music store. Who knew musical instruments had such egos. Fun story.

    1. I wonder if the Ukulele’s will be more accepting of the lesser known instruments? The Kalimba, Octobass or even the Singing Tesla Coil? 😊

  4. Oops, who knew that looks, size and colour play a role for musical instruments too? Great dialogue, love it.

    1. Most definitely Keith! Will it be through knowledge obtained by a long, slow integration or a swift, violent take-over, leaving devastation in its wake? ⁉️

  6. Let’s raise a cheer for the poor, overlooked ukulele. At least it never get’s mistaken for any other instrument.

    1. Definitely, yet in its minority, the richness of the world not only bypasses it but, shuns it for its smallness and lack of “perceived” beauty. Thank you for reading and responding Sandra! 😊

      2. No worries Sandra – was probably your “auto-correct” correcting it incorrectly! 😄

  7. Yes, if only the instruments could talk to us; perhaps music is their language. Rather harmonious music than bad mannered complaints.
