  • Nights Blanket

Original artwork courtesy of Lainy Art

Darkness has settled around the house
the sun pulling up the night sky
to cover his warmth and dim his rays
while taking the morn to others

Mother moon slips in half way
mercurial in her moods of disclosure
unable to shine bright from within
she steals the suns light as he sleeps

Animals all either rise or slumber
    nocturnal creatures roam to feed
while diurnal’s find a place to shelter
    safe and sound until morning

I pad down the hallway on bare feet
the soft slapping sound reminds me
it is time to sleep my body needing rest
turn the lights out going to bed alone

  • Magical Sails

    In response to –
The Sunday Whirl Wordle #624 Hosted by bwarren

Atop a magical boat of sails
    as it takes a spin
    or three
    out into the open sea

One can stretch a wing or two
    into the breeze
so they can see with eyes of blue
    this fairytale written for you

Though it is only barely there
    the ink where written
    still light and pale
do not scorn the sudden gale

    It is not through contempt
    our lessons we learn
    but through pain and worry
    and saying I’m sorry

  • Thorns of Love

In response to FOWC with Fandango – EMBARK

    Two separated by one
    one who sits alone
    loves cruelest thorns
    pierce three hearts
    painful vines separate them

    Years split away from decades
    vines entangle and thicken
    impossible to unwind
    tiny red buds form
    bloom and die

    The bush grows bigger
    pushing past its boundaries
    hungry roots slither
    beneath the fertile ground
    poisonous to their prey

    Just as the wandering rose
    began its uncharted meandering
    so too did three lovers
    embark on separate paths
    of intertwined heartache and joy

  • Impish Boy

    In response to Fandango’s
    FOWC with FANDANGO –
    Prompt Word … IMPISH

    classroomclipart.com

    Rough beginnings first trimester
tiny babe nearly lost from the womb
    Unseen fighter with his mother
    not willing to relinquish life

    First birthday what a party
friends and aunts filled the room
    Little man in his walker
    pinched his fingers party’s over

Five years old first day of school
hops on the bus a big boy now
    Sister walks beside her brother
loving helping the best of friends

Changes happen as is the way
school and friends can often sway
    Innocent minds so easily corrupted
    sometimes they are led astray

Boy is grown into a man
leaves his home to forge his path
Decides his life was not so grand
turns his back on mom and sis

    Estranged now for many years
    confusion reigns wondering why
How I miss my impish boy
hope to see him before I go away

  • Sailing Ship

    Interminable darkness
    thicker than oil
    Smothers the living
    no conscious thought

    Upon the horizon
a ship tiny is far away
    Surrounded by light
    buoyed by hope

    This sailing ship powered
    by the winds of love
    One island left behind
    swallowed up by the night

    A new island ahead
    made bright by its light
    Vibrant greens and flowers await
opening wide at the ships wake

Suns warm rays follow it in
    surrounding the bow
    caressing the stern
A luminous light in the dark night

    Docking it rests
for a brief moment in time
    Until it’s gone again
    leaving the island dark behind

  • Identity

In response to Sue W. & Gerry C.’s

Weekly Prompts Wednesday Challenge – Identity

    Daddy’s little girl
    for a time
    until I wasn’t

    Mommy’s bane
    jealousy reigned
    until it didn’t

    Waiting to grow up
    beautiful like the others
    until I couldn’t

    First love bloomed soft
    petals open to the sun
    until it left

    New love comes along
    sings an enamored song
    until it stopped

    Little babies born
    a heart swells with joy
    until I’m discarded

    Life moves forward
    pain and shards of happiness
    until scabs form

    Despair disappears
    when he is near
    until he isn’t

    Adrift in a chaotic sea
    rescued by the one
    until there are two

Dad and mom have passed away
    lovers love espoused to another
    until the end of time

    Dogs and trees now
    comfort me
    until they too are gone

  • THE KEY

In response to Sammi Cox’s Weekend Writing Prompt #297

The key lay cold in her hand, burning through the skin of her palm all the way to bone. It just could not be true. Not after all this time and her continued, often hurtful efforts.

Looking up at the handsome man in front of her, she turned the key within the rusty lock. The big dog leapt from the cage into her arms, the key fell to the floor, forgotten.

  • Choose

Photograph courtesy of C.J. BURTON//GETTY IMAGES

    Someday in the far distant
    continuum of time
I may ask you to choose

Yet even now should I ask
    that fateful question
it would be me who couldn’t stay

    What benevolently cruel
    Keeper of Fates placed us
    in such a refutable circumstance

    Does it now laugh sadistically
    at the heartbreaking situation
drinking in the longing and pain

    Each passing moment ripped
    from the hours alone knowing
if I asked you to choose I would lose
