What do you say
to years of decay
To a woman or a man
who sacrificed all
defending freedom for our land

Is thank you enough
when they’ve had it so tough
To come home bandaged wrapped
after fighting tyranny and hate
or worse sent back in a crate

We discharge them back home
then leave them alone
To keep fighting and struggling
a monumental effort to maintain
while still staying sane

Before they are grown
they are drafted and flown
To lands where freedom failed
the ones that survived returning
to find their own government bailed

My brother who retired from the army worked many years post retirement as an welfare officer helping returning wounded , mentally and physically, soldiers and their families. He often dispaired at how hard it was to get them help and how much he had to begg and bamboozle! 🫣
