On the Southern Side

He lives there, ‘cross the lake that’s froze now, but in the spring there’s frogs and minnows. We ain’t ‘posed to go in there on-a-count of we don’t live on that side-a that fence there. We used to be able to go swimming’ an all, but then they bilt those big houses and that’s when they put up that fence.

I seen him one day, walkin’ his fancy dog, an talkin’ to it just like it were a person. At first I wondered had that man lost his marbles, but I figure he just loves it that much.

Lucky dog.

  4. I echo what others said about the voice that makes the story. Childhood friends or even sweethearts divided by classism. I wonder if he remembers her.

  6. I love the voice and the world of us and them you created. That’s the way it is, sadly so. How they watch the man who cares for his dog and feels envy…lucky dog. Well done!

  7. Gypsie, the voice in this rings with humanity, even though being human isn’t all it’s cracked up to be with our rep. The MC’s benevolence even as he’s being excluded brings a tear to my eye.
