Light fades
the year passes by
Brilliant when new
dimming to hues of brown
in summer

Leaves fall
the circle continues to spin
Just before the end
myriads of colors clash together
in a magnificent climactic explosion

October blows a cold wind
through my soul
Days of water and warmth
are gone

Nights of frozen stillness
seize the lonely one
Icy tendrils pierce
a barren heart

Twigs snap outside
the foggy window
Beware for the dead
of winter is coming

(Dedicated to my Pomsky, Koda – who constantly does this!)

Eenie Meenie Miney Mo
catch a doggie by his toe
He chewed up my favorite sheets
all to go trick or treat!

He’s too fast and I’m too slow
but in the doghouse he will go
That’ll teach him not to eat my sheets
all for silly Halloween treats!

The banshee she hunted
each Halloween night
Released from the veil
into a wonderland of prey

She camouflaged her stink
with human aftershave
To find her a gerbil
to free her from a witch’s spell

Yet years had passed to her dismay
gerbil’s ran faster than lightning
and away they went
– zip zip zip!

I have never jumped on a trampoline
I wonder how it would be to fly
to hit the bottom then bounce back up
to jump and jump and jump

I have never skied across a lake
frozen over with wintry ice
How wonderful I think it would be
to slide and slide and slide

I have never sped upon water ski’s
salty sea water beneath my feet
A wonderful time like a dolphin skims
to swim and swim and swim.

I have never run through a field of corn
with other children from the farm
To hop around and chase the mice
to run and run and run

I have felt the kindness of a stranger
stopping to hold an open door
Thankful for the occasional chatter
I smile and smile and smile

Brutal is the love

that can not be realized
Tortuous is the love
that must be denied

Ferocious is the pain
of love subdued forever
Merciless is the ache
of forbidden love

Savage is the pining
for everlasting love
Relentless is the thirst
for love’s committed kiss

Heartless was Cupid
directing love’s arrow
Ruthless was his aim
at these two lover’s hearts

A two-person ‘Rengay’

gaof-light blocked by darkness
searches through the masses
warmth, energy circle the globe

db-new dawn edges past despair —
love reminds us how to breathe

gaof-red moon falls into the sun
molten rays melt hate and pain
meadows of hope emerge

db-warships gather rust —
freed souls rise from buried dreams
builders greet fresh morn

gaof-warriors sleep undisturbed
we honor their true birthright

db-watchers drift
orbit round the Earth
vigilant

I’m Rengay is a form of linked verse created as an alternative to Japanese renga or renku. The form was devised by Garry Gay in California in 1992. A rengay consists of six thematic haiku verses and is normally composed by two or three poets, although solo and six-person rengay are not uncommon.
